Alternator Leads and terminals for evidence of overheating or looseness Replace lead and / or tighten terminal nuts
Mount brackets for security Tighten attaching nut / bolts
Drive belts (V-Belts) for excessive wear or looseness Replace belt set, tighten
Belt pulley shaft nut for looseness Torque to 40-50 ft lbs
Brushes for excessive wear Replace if length is less than 3/16 inch
Voltage regulator (Electronic) Leads for tight connection and damage Tighten or replace
Cooling fins for cleanness Clean if required
Drain hole in base for obstruction Clean if required
Battery Terminals for corrosion Clean
Mount tray and hold downs for acid damage, dirt, corrosion Clean or replace if excessive damage
Hinged vent cap for damage and operation Repair or replace if needed
Low electrolyte level Replenish
Loose cable clamp Tighten
Cables Insulation damage Replace
Clamp bolt and nut thread damage Replace
Equalizer Cable terminal attaching nut looseness Tighten
Cooling fins cleanliness Clean if required
Attaching screws looseness Tighten
Wiring harnesses Damaged insulation or loose terminals Tighten or replace
Improper routing Reroute and secure
Connector plugs secure mating Fully insert plug
Distributor Cap cleanliness Clean
Cap cracks Replace
Hold-down clamp tightness Tighten
Vacuum hose damage or leaks Replace hose if damaged
Spark plug leads Insulation brittleness, heat damage, cuts Replace
Attachment security Connect properly
Lead separator clip damage Replace
Electronic ignition unit Harness plug secure Fully insert plug
Heat sink cleanliness Clean if required
Ballast resistor Wiring connection security Tighten
Housing cracks Replace
